Gen Z replaces millennial tribal tattoo trend with cyber sigilism – what is it?

Forget tribal tattoos – Gen Z is bringing a futuristic, new favorite to body art.

The generation’s paint of choice is cybersigilism, a kind of sharp, spiky line work that looks both gothic and space-age.

“They usually feature intricate, thin black lines that form sharp patterns,” tattoo artist Sydney Smith explained to Popsugar. “These tattoos often incorporate technological or mystical elements, creating a unique aesthetic that is both modern and ancient.”

The tattoo trend has exploded on TikTok, with thousands of users flaunting their cybersigliism body art, and even celebrities have leaned into the trend.

Dua Lipa has a small piece of art on her bicep, while Billie Eilish’s spine tattoo spans almost her entire back. Phoebe Bridgers has a cyber sigilism tattoo on her groin, and one of Grimes’ legs is marked in a similar style, albeit in red ink.

“In this fast-paced, technology-driven world, people are always looking for ways to stand out and tell their stories,” Smith explained.

“Cybersigilism tattoos give them that canvas, letting them show how their beliefs and experiences are intertwined with our digital lives.”

For those looking to get their cybersigylism tattoo done, it comes at an attractive price due to the precision and line work required for the ink style.

Small tattoos can cost as little as $100, while larger pieces can cost up to $500, according to Popsugar.

“These tattoos often involve a lot of detailed and detailed work, which takes more time and skill, so you can command a higher price than simpler art,” Smith said.

Ink is so rampant among the younger generation that people have compared it to the Gen Z version of tribal tattoos, which were popular among Gen X.

“So GenZ are getting the same tattoos as their GenX parents?” wrote a TikTok user.

“As a Gen X with a tribal seal, I was shocked when my Gen A son got a tribal tattoo and then a cyberscigilism,” said one parent of her Gen Alpha child. “His fashion is also a spin on what his dad wore in high school. It all comes back.”

“My issue with cybersigilism is that I associate it with the Monster Energy logo,” one person said.

While critics claim that cybersigrilism is just a modern take on tribal ink, this wouldn’t be the first time Gen Z has revived an old trend with their generational spin.

Tramp stamps, for example, have become popular in recent years amid a Y2K-style revival, despite a reported “tattoo recession” among younger clientele.
