Millennials oppressed by ‘totally inappropriate’ interpretation of ‘Macarena’ lyrics: ‘It’s not fair’

The kids had no idea what they were shaking him for.

For 1990s party people, the beat of the “Macarena” still rings as the decade’s sultry soundtrack, which came complete with its club-worthy choreography.

But now, the nostalgia bubble surrounding the Spanish-language hit is bursting — much to the chagrin of millennials and older — thanks to the intervention of TikTokers who have analyzed the lyrics to discover their not-so-lively translation.

The ‘Macarena’ peaked in popularity in the ’90s, seeing people of all ages dancing to the hit without fully understanding its dubious lyrics. to YouTube

“What do you know about the ‘Macarena’ in English, content creator Maddie Jackson asked her nearly 720,000 followers.

“Give your body joy, Macarena. Your body is to give good things. Give your body joy, Macarena. Hey, Macarena!” she sang in the chorus of the 1993 song, translating the words, originally performed by Latin pop duo Los Del Río, into English.

Jackson went on to explain that the song’s lyrics describe a young woman named Macarena who may have cheated on her military boyfriend with two of his friends.

“That’s not fair,” the blonde complained as she cut a disappointed frown.

And fallen people the world over agree.

The former chart-topper, which spent 60 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart during the mid-’90s, has taken a virtual beating in recent years.

The know-it-all Gen Z spent last summer trying to improve on the ditty’s iconic dance moves, adding new, albeit clumsy, steps to the multi-part routine.

Hilary Clinton hasn’t helped preserve the cool legacy of the number either. The 76-year-old former US secretary of state had viewers “creeping” in January when she tried to nail the “Macarena” during the holiday in Spain.

And now, to go with the black eye that’s coming from Zoomers and the shower of embarrassment that’s going on thanks to Boomers, the tune’s controversial lyrics are experiencing a viral crush.

“Yes,” said influencer Elizabeth Devasto in an eye-opening post, revealing the ugly truth of the “Macarena.”

“Throughout our childhood we were dancing to a song about a woman cheating on her husband,” she added. “Twelve year old getting fired up for some adultery.”

Jake Randall, a UK-based content creator, also shared his dismay at loud texts in a clip. Astounded by the song’s sinister nature, he even begged teachers to let him play the song at children’s dances and school dances.

Randall’s commenters agreed.

“One of the many songs we had no business singing at age 9,” wrote one supporter.

“It’s the cheaters theme song,” cried another, before an equally outraged naysayer deemed the song, “totally inappropriate”.
